ADVOCACY ACTION COMMITTEE AT AMSA PRE-MED @ UCLA
Advocacy:
noun, the act of arguing on behalf of a particular issue, idea or person. The main goal of the Advocacy Action Committee is to promote, and thus advocate for disabled, LGBT (Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender persons), women and minorities in medicine.
These are people that have been historically underrepresented in the medical profession.
We aim to increase the amount of these people matriculating into medical schools in order to create cultural diversity among physicians. This is important because it will lead to better treatment for patients from these particular backgrounds.
Healthcare disparities have afflicted these people to a much greater degree than any other demographic -- one of America's worst atrocities. We strive to make these issues publicly known in hope that changes in the medical profession and healthcare will occur.
In an effort to recruit students from these underrepresented backgrounds and to get them interested in medicine at an early age, we have established the Widening the Pipeline program.
