Week 9 of Spring Quarter 2009

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

6:00 - 7:00 PM in Moore 100

SUBJECT: California Universal Healthcare Act
by the Bill's Author, Senator Sheila Kuehl

Former State Senator Sheila Kuehl, who recently concluded fourteen years of service in the California legislature, was the author of the California Universal Healthcare Act, (Senate Bill 840). This landmark legislation passed the California Senate and Assembly in 2006 and, again, in 2008, but was vetoed both times by Governor Schwarzenegger. In February 2009, it was re-introduced by Senator Kuehl's colleague, Senator Mark Leno, under the bill number 810.

Senator Kuehl will discuss the importance of effectively and strategically advocating for this bill and why universal healthcare through a single payer system can help alleviate many of the problems inherent in our current healthcare "system" and aid the millions of uninsured and underinsured people in California and in the United States.
