GLOBAL HEALTH ACTION COMMITTEE AT AMSA PRE-MED @ UCLA

Global Health Action Committee and Its Two Projects:
Global AIDS Project and International Outreach Program (IOP)

The Global Health Committee's goal PHOTO: World Globe / African Continent and Medical Stethescopeis to increase awareness and education of health and human rights issues around the world. We hope to provide you with the information and resources that you need to become more involved and to take action so that you can make a difference.

Our main event is the Global Health Fair that is held in the Spring. It is a carnival-like event where we raise awarness of current issues in global health as well as raise money for the charities that strive to redress them. Previous topics include hunger and famine in North Korea, illegal organ harvesting in China, and the AIDS epidemic in India.  However, the topics are totally up to you guys! So if you have a particular topic of interest related to global health or human rights that you would like to discuss, be sure to let me know!

International Outreach Project (IOP)

. . . cradling the world through the arms of medicine

PHOTO: Stethescope and Globe of World, small The IOP (International Outreach Project) is a completely student-run organization that focuses on international health issues, especially in poverty stricken areas. The IOP is a venture of the American Medical Student Association Premedical Chapter at UCLA, sponsored by the UCLA Career Center and is a non-profit organization of concerned students and medical professionals, working to support international responsibility in the assurance of health to regions of the world in most need. We work with underserved countries in a medical and public health capacity. Our goals are to give students experience in the internation field and allow them to bring these experiences with them as the go into the health care field.

As a non-profit, the IOP serves medically indigent communities around the world.  While IOP does provide basical medical services, its focus is to advocate for better health in a holistic way.  Our aim is to not only provide basic medical services, but provide support and advocacy as well. Ranging from English classes to healthy living workshops, IOP seeks to make a difference in the most forgotten communities.

We believe in a holistic view of medicine so we do more than just hand out referrals or medications - we do a lot of public health related work too. For example, our last trip to Costa Rica has included workshops that taught people how to effectively see a doctor, hand washing, community health and more.

IOP is currently working with the Nicaraguan refugee communities in Costa Rica that are not covered under Costa Rica's universial healthcare policy.  Stuck in shanty towns and denied social services, these Nicarguan immigrants work the dirtiest jobs for the lowest wages and cannot afford any medical services.  The IOP's work in these communities have included immunizations, basic health checks, health workshops and house visits for support and assessment.

During the school year, we do try to get as much training as possible and previous years have included phlebotomy, injection and massage trainings.

We also do a lot of fundraising and education as well so that we are prepared for our trips abroad.

We try to volunteer around Los Angeles as well. Because we are a student-run group, there is a lot of participation involved and opportunities and events are all founded by members, so we really like to see creativity!

Our team is composed of undergraduate students from all ethnicities and backgrounds, guided by advisors, teachers, and health care professionals. This collaboration of individuals is committed to contributing our time and energy to the global community in the hopes that our efforts will make a difference. Also, the students will benefit as participants, building character and compassion, both for their chosen career path as future health care providers and citizens of humanity. On a larger scale, we hope our experiences will resonate, and that one day our careers as health care providers will continuously be emboldened by a passion for service and the belief in health care access as a human right.

Global AIDS Project

The main focus of the Global AIDS Project is to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS globally. Educating people about HIV/AIDS (what it is and how it is spread), improving treatment, and providing care and support for people currently living with HIV/AIDS are a few of the goals the Global AIDS Project is aiming to accomplish. AIDS Walk Los Angeles is the main event of our project and it will be AMSA's first large event of the year. It was on Sunday, October 19, 2008 in beautiful West Hollywood. The walk began and ended in West Hollywood Park at San Vicente Boulevard, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. It is a great way for all of you to come out and meet other AMSA members, old and new. So be sure to come out and join us for the next one!

If you are interested in becoming more involved in this project contact the Global AIDS Project Director, Charlotte Yoon at globalAIDS@amsabruins.org
