WEEK 6

Wednesday, November 8 at 6:00 - 7:00 PM, Franz Room 1260

Smoke-Out event: National Quitting Tobacco Smoking Week

This proactive event features a panel of speakers who are leading experts and national experts on tobacco and health. They are all full-time professors of the UCLA School of Public Health, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the School of Nursing.

Over 400,000 people die each year in the US from illnesses caused by smoking, and another 53,000 die who are not even smokers but involuntarily inhale others' secondhand smoke!

These medical professionals will speak on medical issues -- the harmful effectsof smoking and secondhand smoke on virtually every organ and system in the body -- as well as patient health education by physicians, and how future physicians can promote *effective* action for reducing tobacco smoking and avoiding major health damage for the community, our friends, other UCLA students and for our future patients when we are practicing physicians.

Reducing and eliminating tobacco use and second-hand smoke (environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS) has been identified by the US Surgeon General and every leading health organization as having the single greatest impact on improving health and avoiding unnecessary disease and early mortality! And physician intervention with patients is recognized by evidence-based medicine as the most important mechanism to prompting patients to commit to a successful quitting program.

We will learn the most effective ways to assist smokers who are ready or contemplating quitting their smoking addiction, that clinical research has shown to work best. And opportunitieswill be presented to help plan and participate in research with human subjects, while helping fellow students quit smoking in a tobacco smoking intervention program at UCLA.

If you are a smoker, former smoker, or have friends/or family who smoke, or if you plan to practice medicine and assist your patients with preventive measures to ensure their better health, then this is the event for you!

WEEK 2

Wed., January 17, 2007 at 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
in FRANZ Room 1260

Women and Minorities in Medicine
  • There are very few disparities that exist in medicine between men and women, but there are a few fields that remain predominantly male dominated: Urology, Neurosurgery and Orthopedics.
  • Female residents who are in these fields often feel isolated, but for the most part are accepted as part of the team.
  • There is a rumor that neurosurgery avoids recruiting women because of their high rate of dropping out of the field because it is very rigorous and lengthy.
  • Minorities who are underrepresented in medicine, on the other hand, have a much greater barrier to overcome than women.
  • There are frequent barriers to women and minorities who must try to prove their worth and intelligence to superiors who fall back on stereotypes of race and skin color. Some superiors repeatedly make the same comments or "jokes" to residents or medical students without understanding their implications, and they feel that they can do so because they hold a position of power.

WEEK 3

Wed., January 24, 2007 at 6:00 - 7:00 PM, FRANZ Room 1260

Global Health

Come hear about disparaties in global medicine and get motivated to act!

One of the biggest problems in global medicine is that there is so much poverty, people can't get the help that they desperately need.

Presenting a discussion on Global Health Disparities and speakers:

Tina Wu, AMSA Global AIDS fellow, will be speaking about AIDS.

Dr. Puvvala and Dr. Granados from the Harbor UCLA Clinic will come to share their experiences with poverty in medicine overseas.

>What are "Global Health Disparities"?

This term was coined to represent those in the international community who DO NOT have ACCESS to adequate healthcare.

We will learn about how the healthcare system of the different parts of our world (Africa, Europe , and Asia) affect not just the poor, but also the working-class citizens of each region. From that, in turn, we shall also be able to understand how and why this actually affects us as future healthcare professionals.

This concept has a lot to do with why AMSA's International Outreach Project (IOP) has volunteers who work in Costa Rica . You can find out more information about IOP from IOP director (Ashkan) and IOP members at this meeting.

These are really wonderful speakers, so make sure you come out and learn what you can do to help! We hope to see you on Wednesday, January 24th at 6 PM in FRANZ 1260.

Health Care Reform: Why We Need It, How It Will Affect Us as Future Physicians and Our Patients, and What Political Candidates Are Proposing To Do About It!

The American health care system and our methods of insurance and paying for health care are leaving over 46 million of the 300 million Americans, without any health insurance and millions more who have trouble getting to see physicians when they need medical care.

The Legislative Affairs Action Committee presents this great opportunity to learn all about the issues facing all of us as we enter the profession of medicine in the 21st Century. We need to all be part of the solution to this problem.

Representatives will talk about the need for reform and the many proposals to solve this towering national crisis on the federal and state levels. We will hear about the current status and need for change, from these exciting speakers:

  • Eric Bauman, R.N., who is the Democratic Party Chair for Los Angeles, about the three probable presidential candidates' proposals by Senators Clinton, Obama and McCain
  • Possibly a representative of the Republican Party about Republican presidential candidate Senator McCain's health care position
  • George Savage who is the Director of the Los Angeles Chapter of California health care reform organization "Health Care For All California" and the State Chair of the "One Care Now Campaign" -- single payer plan -- and see a video!
  • California Senator Sheilah Kuehl's health care reform proposal, Senate Bill SB 840 of the State of California, that AMSA has endorsed for the last three years.

For more information, email the Legislative Affairs Action Committee, at:
